PRIVATE |

SFBATCO

WRITTEN BY MONA PIRNOT DIRECTED BY PETER J KUO

A searing one-act play interrogating the collision between privacy rights + our intimate relationships.

This is one of many performances I have photographed for SFBATCO, each one is unique and the actors, musicians, and set techs are a dream to work with.

MOUTH OF A SHARK

RAMON RAMOS ALAYO + ALAYO DANCE COMPANY

A reflection on the lives of immigrants, Mouth of A Shark is inspired in part by Somali poet Warsan Shire’s poem Home. It incorporates the choreographer’s extensive knowledge of Afro-Cuban dance forms into a conceptual framework of the dual identities of immigrants.

While photographing this performance I cried several times. I am in awe of how much soul Ramon pours into his craft.

CUBA CARIBE

FESTIVAL OF DANCE + MUSIC

Reunión/Gathering a mixed program with performances by:

Alafia Dance Ensemble, Los Lupeños de San José, Agua Doce Dance, Cuicacalli, Embodiment Project, La Unión Matancera, Batey Tambó.

I hope these photographs can do justice to the power of these dancers + musicians.

MISS + MR. SAFE LATINO

A PAGEANT CELEBRATING PRIDE + HIV AWARENESS

What began as a response to the HIV epidemic almost three decades ago, has evolved into an annual community-building event with focus on wellness for LGBTQ Latinos/as produced by Instituto Familiar de la Raza. This was the first pageant completely in Spanish! Such an honor to work with these talented individuals.

I, TOO, SING AMERICA |

SFBATCO

WEAVING THE PERSPECTIVES + EXPERIENCES OF AMERICAN BIPOC ARTIST WITH POETRY, SONG, + MOVEMENT.

Conceived+musically composed by Othello Jefferson, directed by Jamie Yuen-Shore, with movement direction by Christine Chung.  It is an inclusive song of America. Celebrating the diversity of BIPOC American life featuring a diverse ensemble of 25 performers. The show brings the poetry of great American authors such as Langston Hughes, Frances Chung, and Vince Gotera to life through original music and dance.

There is nothing like the feeling of being on stage. Warm from all the colorful lights but with chills from the excitement of energy you get from the audience.

I love being on stage too but I'll be behind the curtain or in the front row ready to capture you in all of your glory. Documentation of your performance  is irreplaceable  just as the time you spent getting to opening night.

These photographs were commissioned  for publications + archives.
